Update (3rd of November): Aperture 1.5.1 did not require any modifications, it just runs even on 12″ PowerBook. Apple’s website still lists the same requirements as before, but maybe they just didn’t update it?
Apple says:
Run Aperture on any Intel-based Mac. Any desktop, including Mac mini, iMac, and Mac Pro. Or any notebook, including MacBook and MacBook Pro.
We’ll see if they removed the annoying hardware checks for G4 and G5 based systems as well. So far they don’t have the hardware compatibility checker for version 1.5. available. One can hope that there will be no more hassle with Hexedit for version 1.5, but so far I have no clue.
Update: Well now we know that the PowerPC hardware checks are still the same and I’ve tested the hexedits suggested by AP in the forum and they work for me. They are:

0xb5e4 40 9E 00 88 -> 48 00 00 88

Just downloaded 1.5 via Software Update. Thankfully, I remembered to archive my copy of 1.1.2 before upgrading, because they’ve still got the same damn checks in place. What a surprise…
It really galls me that my friend’s 1.25 GHz 15″ PowerBook — that’s nearing three years old — is considered acceptable, while my 1.5 GHz 12″ PowerBook, barely a year old, is not. (I accept responsibility for purchasing a copy even knowing the support requirements, but you’d think that Apple would be a bit more flexible. After all, I’m running Civilization IV, a game that supposedly requires a G5 to run, on the same PowerBook. Knowing those requirements, performance is quite acceptable!

FWIW, I just replaced the first occurrence of each hex values from the 1.1 hack and it seems to be fine now on a 1GHz 12″ PB 🙂

Worked Aperture 1.5 on a 12” 1.5 GHZ Powerbook with 1.25 GB Ram.
You need to use Emac. Open the file under aperture/contents/MacOS.
Do a search string forward on “5200”, replace all references of video cards with 1’s. 42 times for NVIDA, 13 times for Intel and 28 times for the third card stated.
You need to this on three occasions…then it will work!

After updating to 1.5 it will no longer run on my G5 mac Mini. I was running it with no problem using the Hex edit for 1.1. Hopefully someone will figure how to edit the 1.5 update.

I have a 1.8 g5 and hexed aperture to run on my imac. now I let the software update do its thing to upgrade to 1.5 and now a message comes up stating “hardware ” not compatible.

To Dennis. I ran 1.1.2 with hex edits on my iBook G4 as describred by David because in my case it did’nt match some hardware stuff. I just ran the software updater yesterday after i backed up my old version of course and it worked like a charm. I have 512 MB internal memory. To do the memory hack is very simple. Go to info.plist in the package content and change the number between the word “string” (it says 1000 by default) and change it to whatever you have. don’t forget to save. And it should work. It’s doesn’t run very fast on my computer but it works though. Good luck.

I noticed that the Apple site listed support for the GeForce 5200 within Aperture 1.5, but the downloadable patch specifically does not support it. This leads me to believe that Apple will, in some manner, need to provide Aperture 1.5 disks to those in our predicament. It’s a shame that the 1.5 update/patch couldn’t have validated that you had an Aperture 1.0/1.1 disk and then proceed with an updated install. Oh well….

Hrm… this isn’t working for me either. I’m getting the same generic hardware not supported error. It’s on a dual 1Ghz Mirrored door powermac. Just so I know I’m doing this right, I ran the update, (copy aperture), edit contents/MacOS/Aperture and with these hex changes and I’m done? I did that and nothing, then I redid the GeForce 5200 hack (replace with 1’s) from before, and it still gives the same error… Also, in the hex code, 0xb548 means 00b548, right? As there actually IS no 0xb548. I seem to recall from last time that it’s some confusing shorthand…can’t actually type ‘x’s into the find field.
Any thoughts?

I’m using a upgraded G4 400 AGP (fastmac 1,5G now) 1,12GB RAM, ATI radeon 8500
It isn’t blasing fast but it works.

I use the mac mini as some kind of backup machine where i’m mirroring my whole aperture library from my macbook pro..

If people get hardware not supported could it be because they don’t have enough RAM? That can be fixed by appropriately editing:
/Application/Aperture/Contents/Info.plist
Apart from that I guess it’s what mark says, get the hexedits right.

I’m confused, I did all the right steps to get rid of the graphics requirements, but it now says “your computer does not meed the blla bla” I edited the info.plist file (changed 1000 to 0, didn’t owrk, then to 500, didn’t work, then to my RAM amout, 768, still doesn’t work, any ideas?

and the hex does not match up what you have listed for 1.5.
It updated, and NOW when I try to open it it says my hardware is incompatible.

Something DEFINITELY changed. It brought back the info.plist file to its original glory, and the Aperture file in the /aperture.app/contents/macos/ directory has changed. The offsets don’t match anymore, and you still get the Graphics Card error. Can someone help?

This hex crack doesnt work with a fresh copy of Aperture 1.5.1. Some people updating from a hacked 1.5 claim that Aperture is continuing to work without further hex edits. But if you are starting with a fresh copy of 1.5.1 it seems like new offsets and hex values are needed to disable hardware checks.

I am starting with an Aperture 1.5 trial version, and I am trying to install it. However, it won’t let me do so because my machine does not meet the minimum requirements. It seems that what you are describing here is a hack to the Aperture application *after* it is installed, but I am not able to get that far. How do you modify the installer to make it think my iBook meets the installer requirements?

managed to install aoerture 1.5 trial on my dual 1 ghz g4 desktop. i used the hacks provided (however, the positions given for the first two 409e0088s and the 409E00D8 etc were not consistent with the trial version, so I changed the first occurrences of these)
Everything works (slowly), except the loupe – which doesn’t work at all… any way around this?

I’m running a G4 tower with 1Gig of Ram and a 400MHz processor and Roy’s hack didn’t seem to work. May have something to do with the fact that the second offset didn’t match up. I found it, but the value was not 40 9E 00 88 (at least not after I changed the first one). Any ideas?

If you partly install using Pacifist, then do the 2 hexedits as in Roy’s post then it should bypass the graphic card checks and install fully. Good luck.

I’ve been able to get Aperture to run on a G4 PowerMac with 1GB of RAM and a 400 MHz processor, but for some reason I can’t get it to run on another machine with the same specs. It actually even has a faster processor and slightly more RAM and I’ve done the same hex edits. Any ideas? My only thought is that they have different video cards. The one that’s working has a Rage180 Pro and the other has a GeForce2 MX. But it’s strange because when I try to run it on the other machine, the dock icon bounces a bit and then nothing happens. Not even an error message.

This sounds like a Prokit problem to me. Check that you have the latest version of Prokit installed on the problem machine, it is an app that all Apples ‘pro’ programs look for when they are launching.

Thanks for the advice. I’ve tried to correct this problem by replacing the ProApps directory from the machine that is not working with the ProApps directory from the machine that is working, but no dice. Perhaps I need to actually reinstall it? If so, where do I find the Prokit/ProApps installer?

You should be able to find a copy on your OSX install disc. Look for Essentials.pkg on Tiger install DVD…Open it with Pacifist and then in System/Private Frameworks/ look for ProKit.framework and install. It is certainly supposed to be there on the Intel Macs, my guess is that it is also on the PPC ones. Failing that there is supposed to be a PPC version with the Aperture 1.5.2 trial.

I downloaded & ran the aperture 1.5.2 update from apple. But now it comes up saying that your Graphics card is not supported. I misplaced the aperture DVD and now I can’t even go back to 1.5.1. I have tried all the Hex Edits and they have probably been changed in the latest update.

My G4 1.25 dual was playing happily with 1.1.2 until I accidentily allowed software update to run and install the 1.5.2 update…then things suddenly turned sour as my library went through the update/upgrade, but then I got the dreaded “not supported” dialogue and suddenly, 1800 images when “poof”…
What I found was that the 1.5.2 there is a third occurance of 40 9E 00 88 at “02D5F0” , change that to 40 00 00 88, plus the other hacks, including the video card edit “1111’s” and the processor speed change in the “info.plist” and it works.

About my situation – yikes. I’m pretty fed up actually. I downloaded the latest 1.5.2 trial version and it wouldn’t open on my apple. The specs are:
Machine Name: MacBook

Memory: 512 MB
80 GB
Bus Speed: 667 MHz
Running on tiger 10.4.8
I bought my machine like 3 months ago – and I can’t believe Aperture is refusing to open up, saying that I don’t meet the hardware system requirements. I also complained to Apple about this – it’s just ridiculous! Can’t open a trial version. HELLO! So, I sympathise with all of you.
So, I started doing some of the suggestions – but it truly doesn’t work. And another commenter is right…who wants to shell out £££ eithout trying it first??
the history is this: tried the initial 1.5.2 – didn’t want to open. so, I backtracked and re-installed the original 1.0 (after having dumped it in the bin). So,now it was back on my system – BUT THEN, it said that it detected an old project from just before I updated to 1.5.2 and it orders me to reload it. (There is no option other than to reload). As soon as it started reloading that old project, (which thankfully I had backed up elsewhere), it just quits. So, I tried it twice more…and twice it unexpectedly quit. Now, I’m left with NO
Aperture that actually works on my system at all.
then, after making all adjustments and ten having this 1.5.2 problem, I thought to myself – just forget this Aperture! I used iview for a while before and it was good enough. Anyone use anything else?

Have looked at the info.plist to perhaps alter the memory requirements (although i have over a Gb) but it’s different to 1.1 anyway. I had it working fine with version 1.5.2 and have made no changes other than updating to 1.5.3. It is a G4 tower with 400MHz processor and 1 gig of RAM. If anyone can offer any help, I’d really appreciate it. In the meantime, my entire photo library is inaccessible… Time to upgrade computers most likely but just can’t afford to do so quite yet. I was hoping that that was going to fix the problem too but unfortunately it didn’t. Still can’t run Aperture on that machine. I’ve re-examined the info.plist file and checked the hex-edits but can’t find any obvious problems there.
If no one else is having problems at this point, would someone mind posting the most current hex edits plus any other required changes so that I can double check to make sure everything is correct? Thanks!

I upgraded from 1.5.2 (which didn’t require any hacking) to 1.5.3 which didn’t require any hacks either. However I think my PB G4 is 1.5GHz and so it’s a bit newer. Back the old executable up, then run software update and you’ll see. You don’t have anything to loose as long as your backup works.

After upgrade my Aperture on PB G4 1.0 Ghz from 1.5.2 to 1.5.3, I got an error that did not pass the hardware check.
Here is how I got it fixed: I use 0xED to find the first two string of 40 9E 00 88 and change them to 48 00 00 88. It seems all work again.

After the update of Aperture 1.5.6,
I use the 0xED application to modify a code :
0xbf08 : 40 9E 00 88 -> 40 00 00 88
that functions well with my G4 2x1GHZ

Aperture 1.5.6 now works on my G4 tower 450MHz AGP after modifying the info.plist file (see above) and changing these hex values:
0xbf08: 40 9E 00 88 -> 48 00 00 88
0xbfa4: 40 9E 00 88 -> 48 00 00 88
